5 Signs You Need Emergency Tree Removal

January 28, 2026

Trees add beauty and value to any property, but when they become hazardous, they can pose serious risks to your home, family, and neighbors. Knowing when a tree needs emergency removal can prevent costly damage and even save lives. Here are five critical warning signs to watch for.

First, a significant lean that has developed suddenly is cause for immediate concern. While some trees naturally grow at an angle, a tree that has recently shifted or begun leaning may have compromised root systems. This is especially dangerous after heavy rains or storms when saturated soil can weaken root anchoring. If you notice a sudden change in your tree's orientation, call a professional immediately.

Second, large cracks or splits in the trunk indicate structural failure. Vertical cracks running along the trunk, or horizontal splits where major branches meet the trunk, suggest the tree could fail catastrophically at any time. These defects weaken the tree's ability to support its own weight and make it vulnerable to wind and weather events.

Third, extensive root damage is a hidden but critical hazard. Construction activity, soil erosion, or root disease can compromise a tree's stability without obvious above-ground symptoms. Signs of root problems include soil heaving near the base, exposed or damaged roots, and mushroom growth at the base of the tree, which often indicates internal decay.

Fourth, large dead branches or a significant portion of dead canopy signal a tree in serious decline. Dead branches, sometimes called widow-makers, can fall without warning and cause severe injury or property damage. If more than half of a tree's canopy is dead, the entire tree may need to be removed.

Fifth, storm damage that has torn major limbs or split the trunk requires immediate professional assessment. Even if the tree appears to still be standing, internal damage may have rendered it unstable. Hanging broken branches are particularly dangerous and should never be left unattended.
